Somo Inuka Pitch competition

The COVID19 pandemic has caused a major shift from brick and mortar selling, to finding newer and innovative ways of gaining customers and increasing sales. It is in this pandemic that we have seen a spike of E-learning platforms such the DigiSomo channel that gives entrepreneurs weekly business tips on variety of topics such as; how to conduct a market research for your business, developing a proper market plan, and how to properly brand your business, among others.

Sister to it, is the DigiKua Application - an android app that allows an entrepreneur to keep a simple record of their daily business transactions via USSD or WhatsApp. It goes without saying that the Internet has provided more opportunities for businesses to scale!

Investor support has also been on the rise, with the growing interest being in investing in social impact ventures. Somos first 2021 Inuka Pitch Competition, brought great entrepreneurial minds and mentors, willing to provide advisory support to the participants. Reserved for our Somo entrepreneurs - the contest creates a platform for these entrepreneurs to each engage in a 15 minute investor pitch, and in turn award the winning contestant with initial capital expenditure to kickstart their venture. Of the 7, Judy - founder of Glow Pop Handwash and Sanitiser, , emerged as the winner, with her hand wash and sanitising venture that seeks to promote health more so during the pandemic.

The judges’ bench on the other hand - having Dr. Edward Mungai of KCIC, Navalayo Osembo - founder and CEO of Kenya’s first shoe brand Enda, Aidah Ng’ang’a of Metta and Dr. Doreen Nabaho of New Globe Africa, were instrumental in giving expert insights on what each entrepreneur would seek to adopt for their business, to see a rise in their sales, post the competition.

Creating a favorable ecosystem through partnerships, mentorships and investor support, is one way that will empower social impact entrepreneurs to be on the rise. Getting to support such innovative solutions to community problems, will ensure the cycle of poverty is broken, and more opportunities made available to low resource setting.
