We held our first Inuka Pitch Competition last Saturday, on 9th May 2020 over zoom. Previously, we held Entrepreneurs Forums, a networking event that allowed the entrepreneurs to pitch their business.
We had seven entrepreneurs in our portfolio pitch including Allan of Portable Voice, Beth of Ahadi Pads, Philip of PheelBeta Wheatgrass, Ruth of Oshar Detergents, Rose of BountyNut Peanut butter, veronica of Verics Hydrofarm and Gregory of Mwengenye Greens. They shared ideas on how they can address current needs in their communities through their businesses.
You can watch it here,
Gregory, the founder of Mwengenye Greens, an urban farm in Soweto in Kayole, won the pitch and received kes 100,000 growth grant.
Gregory and his team are setting up a kitchen garden around Kayole so that families are able to meet their basic needs right now. He has set up a center where urban residents can visit and learn about urban agriculture. Community members can either buy produce from Mwengenye Greens or access needed inputs and resources to begin their own urban agriculture ventures. Gregory will use the funds to mitigate the effects of Covid-19. In addition, we got a matching grant to give our two runners up. Beth and Ruth each received kes.50000 to pursue their Inuka pitch ideas. They were given the news on #MothersDay. Isn't that thoughtful? Beth makes protective masks aside from making reusable sanitary towels while Ruth plans on to set up handwashing stations in Korogocho and Kariobangi and provide free handwash. Both their products can be added to our #SomoCarePack.
Ruth, founder of Oshar, makes a variety of products including sanitizer, hand wash, bleach, toilet cleaner, and natural bar soaps. Her products have become even more vital at this time as getting affordable hand wash and hand sanitizer to people helps save lives. Ruth works to employ other women around low-income areas of Eastlands. We thank the judges who scored the pitches and everyone else who made the event successful.
At times like this, we are even more fiercely committed to supporting our entrepreneurs in addressing local issues that reflect global challenges.
